Larabanga Masjid

Larabanga Masjid

It is one of the historic mosques in Ghana, located in the village of Larabanga in the northern region of Ghana.

The mosque was built in the Sudanese-Swahili architectural style and is the oldest mosque in the country, as well as one of the oldest mosques in West Africa.

It holds great significance and symbolism for Muslims in this part of the world.

According to popular folklore, the mosque was built in 1421, and its structure has been renovated several times since then.

The exterior of the mosque is distinctive and striking, as it is constructed using mud bricks and palm wood.

It features two tall, pyramid-shaped towers, one of which houses the mihrab and forms the eastern facade of the building, while the other serves as the minaret and is located on the northeast side. Both towers are complemented by twelve rectangular structures made of wooden logs.
